The premise of implementation science is that effective implementation requires targeted strategies to improve implementation outcomes. While many plausible implementation strategies have been identified, much less is understood on how and why they work (or not work). There is a critical need to better understand implementation mechanisms to advance the field and fulfill the promise of implementation science. This presentation shared the use of causal pathway diagrams to theorise and visualise these implementation mechanisms.
